World Book Day

On Thursday 2 March students celebrated World Book Day. Year 9 students ran an assembly on Wednesday 1 March with the theme of “Friends in Literature” – a lively interactive quiz involved the whole school and showed what keen readers our students are as they managed to identify all the characters correctly.

In the week leading up to World Book Day, Mrs Gregory – our literacy coordinator – set a tutor group challenge whereby each tutor group was assigned a book which they had to research and then use their findings to create a poster to represent their text.

On World Book Day itself, Mrs Gregory also set a “literary treasure hunt” around the school; it was great to see so many students rushing round, at break and lunchtime, trying to solve the clues. As well as the treasure hunt students had the opportunity to come dressed as a character from a book on World Book Day; George from “Of Mice and Men” rubbed shoulders with a werewolf from “Twilight” and “Serafina Pekkala” from The Northern Lights!

Finally, also on World Book Day, students ran a book exchange which was very popular. Students and staff brought in books for a “swap shop” style lunchtime event. Again, it was most pleasing to see so many students participate – their eagerness for books confirms what keen readers we have in the school. The only condition of the book exchange was that when students have finished the books, they pass them on to someone else who might enjoy them – a great way to keep the reading buzz going.

Well done to all concerned – a very successful celebration of books and reading.
